The term photoaging is used a lot in skincare and is listed as a specific skin concern that many anti-ageing products target. But what is photoaging and why should it be on your radar?

Read on to learn how photoaging relates to premature wrinkles and discover how ELEMIS products could help you to reclaim a youthful complexion.

What is Photoaging?

Photoaging is the premature ageing of the skin and is typically characterised by the following symptoms:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Pigmentation, such as age spots and freckles
  • Rough, uneven skin texture
  • Loss of skin tone
  • Redness

Dermatologists advise that while normal chronological ageing is dictated by age and genetics, photoaging could start in the teenage years. It may also be referred to as photodamage, solar damage or sun damage.

What Causes Photoaging?

Photoaging is predominantly caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun.

Scientists have identified that the two main types of UVR responsible are UVA and UVB.

UVA Light

Research on UVA light suggests that it accounts for 90-95% of UV rays and penetrates through all layers of the skin, from the epidermis to the dermis.

The epidermis is the top layer of your skin and helps to keep your skin hydrated, protected and healthy. The dermis sits below the epidermis and contains collagen and elastin fibres which support skin elasticity.

It is thought that prolonged exposure to UVA decreases the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres and may lead to the formation of premature wrinkles.

UVB Light

Studies show that UVB radiation accounts for only 5-10% of UV rays. These rays are completely absorbed by the surface of the skin, known as the epidermis, and are thought to be responsible for the formation of precancerous cells which risk developing into skin cancer.

How to Prevent Premature Wrinkles Caused by Photoaging

Even if you’ve already noticed premature wrinkles, it is never too late to implement habits that could help to prevent further damage, such as:

UV Rays and Skin Cancer

As UV rays could cause skin cancer, the Cancer Council NSW recommends you examine your skin from top to toe regularly to check for the following:

  • Sores that do not heal
  • Changes in moles, such as growth, irregularity, colour, asymmetry, elevation, pain and itching

Skin cancer is treated more effectively the earlier it is caught so please consult your doctor immediately if you have any concerns.

The Best Skincare Routine for Premature Wrinkles

Establishing a consistent and targeted skincare routine may help to gradually reduce the appearance of photoaging, particularly premature wrinkles.

The award-winning Elemis Pro-Collagen range has been developed to minimise the signs of aging to achieve a smoother, more youthful-looking complexion.

Here’s how to incorporate our innovative Pro-Collagen products into your routine for the ultimate five step anti-aging ritual:

Step One: Cleanser

Deeply nourishing, the Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm helps to cleanse makeup and impurities from the surface of the skin.

Formulated with Padina pavonica - an algae rich in fatty acids - and elderberry oil, it works to visibly improve skin’s elasticity and texture. The unique blend of nine essential oils provides a luxurious, spa-like experience with every use.

How to Use: Warm a pea-sized amount between your palms until it transforms into an oil. Massage over your face, neck and décolleté in a light circular motion. Moisten fingers with water and continue to massage. Remove with a damp cleansing cloth.

Expert Tip: Leave the balm on your skin for an ultra-hydrating mask treatment.

Step Two: Serum

Applying a serum after cleansing ensures that your skin receives a high concentration of active ingredients for your specific concerns.

Our Pro-Collagen Renewal Serum is an effective alternative to retinol. Like our Pro-Cleansing Collagen balm, it is also infused with Padina pavonica, as well as red microalgae, alfalfa and stevia. This advanced formula helps to minimise the look of wrinkles, discolouration as well as other signs of sun damage. Gentle enough for daily use, skin will be left looking firmer and feeling revitalised.

How to Use: After cleansing, massage four to five drops over your face, neck and décolleté in upward strokes.
