Skin typically sheds dead skin cells in a 28-day cycle. However, certain lifestyle and environmental factors like sun exposure and ageing can slow the process. So, weekly, mild exfoliating is essential to increase cell turnover and maintain a smooth, healthy-looking glow.

Read on to discover the differences between physical and chemical exfoliation, and the best exfoliators from ELEMIS.

What Is Exfoliating?

Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin using a physical or chemical skincare product, or exfoliation tool.

The skin naturally removes dead skin cells, but not always completely, or as quick as we’d like. This can result in dry, flaky patches, or clogged pores that create a dull-looking appearance.

 Benefits Of Exfoliating

With a healthy skincare routine, regularly and safely exfoliating can help:

  • Lend a brighter, more even-looking complexion
  • Help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Smooth and refine skins texture
  • Unclog pores and clear excess debris and sebum
  • Aid better absorption for other products in your skincare routine

Types Of Exfoliation Products

When it comes to exfoliating there are two options, a physical exfoliant, and a chemical exfoliant. Both serve the same purpose, but have different pros and cons.

Physical Exfoliation

Physical exfoliation mechanically buffs away dead skin cells immediately, and can come in an exfoliating cleanser form, or a grittier, scrub formula. However, if this method if done too harshly it can be too abrasive, causing irritation or small micro tears in the skins surface.

Chemical Exfoliation

Chemical exfoliants (also known as face peels) like AHA’s and BHA’s contain acids. They help to gently loosen the surface layers of skin by dissolving the bonds that hold the dead skin cells together. This method works to slowly and gently resurface the skin.

These can come in liquid forms, creams, and pastes, and are available in different concentrations.

Chemical VS Physical Exfoliation – Which Is Best?

Both great options, the exfoliation method that’s best suited for you depends on your skin type and goals.

If you have a thick layer of dull skin on the face and are experiencing dryness and flakes, a physical exfoliation may be more effective to break through initial build-up.

Chemical exfoliation for face, however, can be gentler (if used correctly), and further refine the surfaces texture, while reducing the size of pores.

How Often Should You Exfoliate?

To avoid irritation, it’s best to exfoliate with a physical or chemical exfoliator 1-2 times a week. However, if you have a sensitive skin type, once a week may be adequate.

*ensure to always read instructions on the back of packaging, and keep product away from the delicate eye area.
